Types of Latch Bolts for Door Knobs and Levers

Types of Latchs or Bolts

Your locks utilize latch bolts to engage your deadbolt, door knob or door lever and secure your doors. They come in several varieties depending on the type of installation or manufacturer. However, there are a few standards which makes their identification much easier.

The Bolt

Standard Face Plate Latch Bolt – The face plate is recessed into the edge of the door.  This type of face plate is either square or has rounded edges. A manufacturer’s name can usually be seen on the latch plate. Every bolt should provide a minimum of 1″ “throw” or projection to provide adequate security. Latch bolts with face plates provide greater stability for the door hardware because they require two screws to secure the face plate.

Drive In – The drive in bolt performs the same as the standard face plate bolt, but it does not require mortising or chiseling into your door.  A standard bolt can be used in place of the drive in with minor alteration to the door. However, a drive in bolt cannot typically be used in place of the standard bolt unless it is designed to accommodate twist on face plates as shown in the example below.

The Latch

Latches – A latch is similar in first appearance to the bolts however, the latch has a beveled shape.  Latches automatically secure a door when closed, while a bolt must be turned manually. Latches also come as drive-ins like the bolts above.

Deadlatch – The protrusion shown in the illustration below shows how the latch has an auxiliary feature. This feature prevents the latch from retracting under pressure when in the projected position, and properly engaged with the strike plate on the door frame.  This feature is used on key operated locks and prevents bypassing or shimming with credit cards or a similar tool. Latches without this feature should not be used for security areas where key operated locks are required.  Passage locks (hallways and closets) and Privacy locks (bedrooms and bathrooms) typically utilize latches without the deadlatch feature.

Door Hardware: Functions and Applications

EXTERIOR DOORS

  • Front door
  • Garage door
  • Sliding glass doors

What you need:

  • The most common lock function for exterior doors is a keyed entry Clarksburg_OilRubbedBronze_KeyedEntry-16function. Locks with this function have a keyed cylinder facing the outside of the home and a thumb-turn on the interior. When the door is locked, it can only be opened with a key from the outside. When the knob is turned from inside the home, and the thumb-turn is unlocked, the door will open freely.
  • Keyed entry locks are often used in conjunction with an auxilary Single-Cylinder Deadbolt (Oil-Rubbed Bronze)deadbolt for added security. A single cylinder deadbolt has a thumb-turn on the inside and requires a key from outside. Double cylinder deadbolts use a key on both sides of the door. This application is often recommended for doors with glass panels. If an intruder breaks the glass he will not be able to reach in and unlock the deadbolt without the key.
  • Many homeowners choose handlesets for their entry doors rather Rutherford_Oilrubbedbronze_galveston_albemarlethan knobs or levers. Handlesets use a deadbolt to provide a high level of security, and are available in a wide variety of styles to complement the home’s decor.
  • A mortise or interconnected lock with a dwelling entry function is another option for exterior doors. This lockset features an integral deadbolt that is keyed from the outside and inside the home, both the deadbolt and the latchbolt are retracted by turning the knob. This allows for faster exit during an emergency.

INTERIOR DOORS

  • Bedroom
  • Bathroom
  • Closet and passage
  • Office
  • Storeroom

What you need:

  • Many homeowners will find that locks with a passage function are Rutherford_OilRubbedBronze_Passage-07sufficient for most interior doors. This lockset has no cylinder and is freely operational from both sides of the door at all times. It is used on doors in hallways, closets, and other rooms where locks are not needed.
  • Privacy locks are similar to passage locks, but they include locking Rutherford_OilRubbedBronze_Privacy-06using a push or turn button from inside of a room. They are used on bathrooms and bedrooms, where privacy is needed, and typically feature an emergency release mechanism on the outside.
  • For home offices, consider using a free interior entrance lockset, which can be locked with a key from the outside. Occupants can freely exit the room at anytime without a key.
  • If you have a storeroom or pantry that you need to keep kids out of, use a lock with a storeroom function. This lock is always locked unless opened with a key. When the door is closed, the lock automatically reverts back to a locked position. From inside the room, the door will open freely at all times to allow someone inside the room to exit.

HANDING

What you need:

  • When you purchase door levers, keep in mind handing. Doors can be left handed or right handed. To determine the handing of a door, face the outside of the door as though you are entering a room. If the hinge is on the left, the door is left handed. If the hinge is on the right, the door is right handed. Some handles are reversible, which mean they are positionable in either the left hand or the right hand configuration.

When To Replace Your Door Locks

Door hardware is not only part of the design and decor in your home, it is also your first line of defense against unwanted intruders. When considering reliable home security, it is best to be proactive in replacing door locks. Replacing a lock is a small expense which can cost much more if it is not done before the door lock malfunctions. To avoid costly late-night calls to a locksmith, look for signs that your locks need to be replaced.

Wear and Tear
Worn or rusted locks are a serious problem for home security. Old, worn out locks are easier to pick and break, and they are more difficult to open with a key over time. If your lock has significant tarnish, rust, or other visible signs of wear, it may be time to consider replacement locks. If your locks are becoming more difficult to open with the key, you need to replace or service the lock immediately to avoid an impending malfunction that may leave you locked out.

Break-ins
If you have had a break-in or robbery, you absolutely must replace your locks. The force involved in a robbery or break-in can affect the integrity of the mechanics of the lock. A damaged lock will put you at a greater risk of another break-in, and mechanical failures as a result of the damage can cause a lock malfunction that could leave you locked out of your home. After a break-in, it is possible that your keys might have fallen into the wrong hands. You should replace all locks at which the old keys might give someone access to your home.

Lost or Stolen Keys
For greater security in your home, you must replace or re-key your locks if your keys are lost or stolen. Determine which keys you have lost, and replace the locks in order of security priority. Exterior locks which would give an intruder access to your home should be replaced immediately. After your outdoor area is secured, you can replace inner locks in order of your personal security priorities.

New Tenant
If you rent out a home or other property, protect yourself by replacing locks or re-key every time you have a new tenant. You will rest more easily knowing that your locks are secure and protected, and you won’t have to worry about your previous tenants in the event of a break-in. Even if the last tenant turned in their key, they may have made a duplicate copy.
