A revolution is happening in cabinet hardware, and consumers are the beneficiaries.
It was not very long ago that the only place you could purchase cabinet hardware was your small, local hardware store or local cabinet company. Then, along came the Big Box stores. To be sure, the selection was generally a bit better, and the prices a bit lower, but not too much different overall.
The “revolution” – as with so many other consumer products – happened with the invention of the internet, and the growing e-commerce industry that followed. Suddenly consumers were not constrained to choosing products locally and, more importantly, were not forced to pay higher prices based on limited choices and availability.
The cabinet hardware industry has long been dominated by large companies with long histories and recognizable brand names. Many of these companies date back to the early 20th century, and have spent decades building traditional distribution networks, now antiquated compared to the ease and simplicity of e-commerce. Additionally, many of these companies have grown immensely in size, and carry the burden of the incredible overhead costs that are associated with large, established companies.
Thankfully for the consumer, new companies are emerging that can produce and distribute the same quality cabinet hardware at a fraction of the cost of the larger “brand name” cabinet hardware companies. They can do this not because the manufacturing costs are cheaper. In fact, the manufacturing costs for the large companies and the smaller companies are likely very similar. The cost difference can be attributed to the difference in overhead costs between the larger companies and smaller companies. The large companies have hundreds (or thousands) of employees, office buildings, sales centers, and complex distribution networks, while the smaller companies can efficiently sell directly to the consumer.
